Default NVIDIA drivers Version mismatch

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-31-generic kernel) to get XBMC running with a Flat Panel Sony Bravia TV.

Everything went fine except taking audio out of HDMI cable, that is, TV speakers. So in in the meantime I have PC speakers.

My onboard graphics card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C77 [GeForce 8200] (rev a2). As far as I have read, i do not need legacy drivers.

I installed the latest version (290.10) located here http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...10-driver.html in order to try fix the problem.

For some reason I can't get to know, after playing around several days and reboot PC, graphical X doesn't start. The dmesg is:

NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 290.10, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version 260.19.06. Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
NVRM: components have the same version.

To things be more confusing, I run this script http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphic...ia-versions.sh

which gave me the result 'Your card is supported by the default drivers and version 173.' Which is a legacy version???

1. Which version should I use (in theory to solve HDMI audio output problem, if related)
2. How I fix this (I started this manual http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers but it is going to be endless).

Thanks for any hint you may provide.

When you run the driver installer, does it complain about something, like missing kernel headers? If so, install those (linux-headers-2.6.35-whatever) and run the installer again.

Looks like your OS already has nvidia driver package installed. Remove nvidia driver package with synaptic OR apt-get and then install nvidia installer .run file.
