There is a report on the archlinux forum that the new 290.10 solves the problem. I tried to test it, but compiz segfaults here now, so I'll have to sort this out first.
Any experiences with the new driver out here?

I have good news people. Compositing works again with nvidia driver version 290.10 on my nVidia GeForce 7300 GS. I tried only compiz standalone, but I assume it will work in KDE or Gnome as well. Get testing everyone!
Thanks nvidia.

It is good to hear that some people experience progress. Unfortunately the 290.10 driver doesn't seem to work on my system. I'm getting a black screen. Grepping NVIDIA from Xorg.0.log gives:

Even in it's broken state, the 285.05.09 is more usefull.

For me the problem still exists with the new 290.10 driver. :-(

First - when upgrading the driver from the (opensuse) repository, I got the same "... no display devices ..." as mentionad in the last post. Switching to nouveau driver and then back to nvidia solved this.

But if I enable desktop effects (Composite + OpenGL) on Gnome 2 (Gnome 3 doesnt even display the Login) after some seconds the system freezes with blinking keyboard = kernel panic.

Kernel is 2.6.37.6-0.9-desktop on openSuse 11.4, same on Kernel 3.x on opensuse 12.1
Behaviour is the same for drivers from Nvidia Repository and for self-compiled drivers.

Please see this thread for the "Failed to query OR info" and "No display devices found for this X screen" error messages:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=168305

The next release will include a fix for this issue.

So my initial workaround no longer works in KDE 4.8 since they removed the "Use Direct Rendering" checkbox.

And since nvidia is taking forever to release new drivers, I dug around some, and found that we can still work around.

If you set the environment variable:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1

before starting KDE, you can still use the effects. This works here with 275.36 and xorg-server 1.11.2. (In gentoo I did this by modifying the /etc/env.d/77kde file, then calling env-update, then restarting kdm)

It should work on the 285 drivers but that once crashes after I suspend to ram. And as everyone has found out the 290.10 driver doesn't recognize the DFP. Really wish nvidia would pull up its socks.

I just installed the 295.17 driver. It allows me to enable direct rendering without any problems.

In addition it fixes suspend/resume problens that I had with 285.05.09 (where the screen stayed black on resume from suspend to RAM), and the "no screens found" problem that I experienced with the 290.10 driver.

All in all a bit overdue (this problem was first reported in April 2011), but finally a good release from NVIDIA. Thanks for the support.

My current configuration is xorg-server-1.10.4-r1, and KDE SC 4.7.4, on Gentoo.

Wow, I didn't realize they released the beta for linux. Searching thru the regular website shows nothing since Dec.

Awesome news! Works well here too, both the suspend and black screen problems are fixed for me [nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)]

Thanks for reporting, and thanks nvidia for coming to the table

Except it seems that after the machine has gone to sleep once, I lose all my VTs and just can see black screens when going to CTRL-ALT-1,2,3 etc.

By the way D820user, kde 4.8.0 (in ~arch tree of Gentoo) is a GREAT upgrade, it runs soooo much smoother on the aging 7xxx video card.

Thanks for the tip about KDE 4.8, dflogeras. However me being a Gentoo stable user, I'll wait untill 4.8 hits the stable tree. I'm looking forward to it, though. my other laptop is a D810 with r300 graphics. Phoronix reported on some significant improvements there as well.

Switching VT's has always been problematic for me on the D820. When you are lucky it works, but most of the time they just stay dark. At some point in time I believed uvesafb was to blame, apparently frame buffers and binary drivers don't mix well. The D810 with its KMS and DRI2 r300g driver certainly gives a much more pleasant experience when switching VTs.

IMHO KDE 4.7 is pretty good as well, especially the improved pulseaudio integration (compared to 4.6) is nice.

Anyway all of this seems slightly OT. So let me just restate that the 295.17 driver is still working like a charm for me. Thumbs up for nVidia! I guess I could also try the newer 295.20 driver; but let's just say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" for now... ;-)
