Default mx440 driver

I can't get gnome3 to work in debian and ubuntu (but also other distribution) due to video card
I can't get my old mx440 to work
I tried to install driver downloaded from nvidia site, but I had to format the hard-disk...

is there someone who has installed nvidia driver on ubuntu or debian and that has tried to use gnome3 ?

You should probably ask on ubuntu forums since ubuntu incorporates all major NVIDIA drivers.
