Default Random crashes, NVRM Xid messages

Hi,

I have been having random crashes of wine programs (Starcraft II and Neverwinternights) running on my graphics card (bumblebee/optirun).

The crash is always the same:
* Computer locks for 5-10 seconds
* Realease for 1-3 seconds
* locks permanently

The problem seems to be wine and bumblebee independent: I have tried several version of wine (ranging from 1.3.30 (and earlier) to 1.5.1), and also different version of bumblebee and the nvidia driver (from around 275.* to now 295.20).

With wine 1.3.37 (set on Win7) and 295.20 I have for the first time got the crash to take so long that I get some error messages. The crash acts a little different then:

* Computer locks for 5-10 seconds
* Realease for 1-3 seconds
* Flips image upside-down and mirrored (do not affect the apperence of the desktop, which also runs on the nvidia card).
* locks permanently (sometimes I get a few second window here to kill relevant processes, but not often.)

The crash starts with the following error:

Code:
Apr  7 13:28:14 localhost kernel: NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 13, 0003 00000000 00009197 00002390 80000000 00000000
Apr  7 13:28:14 localhost kernel: NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 39, CCMDs 00000004 000090b5
Apr 7 13:28:16 localhost kernel: NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
The rest is in the nvidia-bug-report attachement: nvidia-bug-report.log.gz.

I really need help to figure out what this error message means, or how to debug this problem further.

Thanks for any help.

Good luck getting it resolved man. I know tons of people on these boards having this issue (I get it too but usually only when switching X sessions) and nvidia has pretty much ignored all reports of this issue and never replies to the threads =(

I been bugging about this for a long time as well. I tried using ATI for a while with similar results.

So far I have found 295.33 to be the most stable but I experience this issue on a daily basis.

I have almost the same issue, only with me, Xorg will restart, leaving screen corruption in the top left corner. This issue only happens when I use the latest driver (295.33). Rolling back to 290.10 and my system is rock solid again.

edit, I don't use wine, it isn't installed. I sometimes get a hard crash but only on rare occasions. It is either Chrome or vlc, both are hardware accelerated.

Thanks for the solidarity so far :-)

Does anyone know how or where to look up these codes? This seems to be "13". I guess nvidia would have some code for thinks like 'overheating', 'unreadable memory', 'unwritable memory' and so on. That would at least say something if this is a software fault or because of hardware.

I tried the 295.33 driver, and the Xid 39 error did not appear. So it seems there is some difference between .20 and .33.

Guess I have to hope the 13 error to go away sometime in the future...

nvidia 295.40 also locks up the kernel (wine + crysis2 using bumblebee in my case).

I've been experiencing this lockup issue for many months now (eg see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...68#post2444989 and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...48#post2495268, and I have seen many other threads opened about with the same kind of problem) but have never seen any feedback from the nvidia devs, which is very disappointing.

I just experienced this crash using Boinc:

Apr 13 16:20:11 zod kernel: [ 705.642159] NVRM: Xid (0000:02:00): 31, Ch 00000007, engmask 00000101, intr 10000000
Apr 13 16:21:11 zod kernel: [ 765.601835] NVRM: Xid (0000:02:00): 31, Ch 00000007, engmask 00000101, intr 10000000
Apr 13 16:21:39 zod kernel: [ 793.301944] NVRM: Xid (0000:02:00): 31, Ch 00000007, engmask 00000101, intr 10000000
Apr 13 16:24:33 zod kernel: [ 966.992647] NVRM: Xid (0000:03:00): 31, Ch 00000005, engmask 00000101, intr 10000000

And in wine I am lucky to play 20 minutes without an Xid error.

Starting to wonder if maybe my one 6990 that did not burn out in three months should go back in this box. IMHO, with all things considered, the AMD drivers are maybe a bit better than Nvidia's, but still nothing to write home about. Time to make a donation to the Nouveau project maybe....

I concur, 295.33 has been the most stable and incident-free driver yet.
295.40 is very finicky, throwing all sorts of XIDs with my usual use-pattern
(firefox + mplayer, kde).

I do not agree. The .20 have an avrage of maybe ~1-1.5 hours to crash (#13 and #39 errors), and .33 and .40 ~10 minutes (only #13). But that might be since .33 and .40 are 'unstable' in gentoo, maybe they'll be better once stabalized (or newer stable version comes out).

If anyonw is still following this, I debugged this some more.

Apparently there is some more errors now.

There was one bug conflicting with this issue that are in the 3.2.* kernels, which craches the i915 driver. When I upgrade to a 3.3.* kernel, the i915 crash does not appear, the full dmesg is then:

Quote:

(attahed nvidia-bug-report)

The crash then progress a bit further:
* The screen flips upside-down and mirrors, stays for a few seconds (10-20)
* The screen flips back (10-20 sec.)
* The screen flips upside-down-morror and back ~30 times in a row
* The application crash.
