I have Asus M5A97 EVO and fx-8120 and experience this bug. Seen it with all bios version from the one that came with it and up to 1102.

That seems to suggest that it is tied to the CPU.

Deanjo, you mentioned that you were discussing this problem some time ago with Asus, did you establish a contact in the company that would be able to address this issue? It might be more effective than submitting a ticket.

I reflashed 1102 again and reset everything to default apart from enabling IOMMU (both 64MB and without). I've tried the three most recent versions of the nvidia kernel module - 295.33, 295.20 and 290.10.
I went a bit further and installed openSUSE 12.1 in a another partition and upgraded that to tumbleweed. I suspected there might have been a difference in Xorg, but no luck. I still get a lockup and Xids in the logs.

I have attached full logs up to the crash. Hopefully that will help nvidia or whomever else is looking at this issue.

I'd be happy to try beta drivers or BIOSes or anything else...

Same here.

Must disable iommu to get x working with Nvidia propietary drivers.

Motherboard GA-990FXA-UD3 rev1.0 Bios: all tried

Processor: AMD phenom II x3 710 (is not an FX one)

Graphics: GT240

S.O: Ubuntu12.04 beta2

Kernel: 3.2.. , 3.3..., 3.4...

I did another test

In ubuntu 12.04 beta2 i removed all sources related to this distro and put instead the oneiric sources.

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

And i get the nvidia 280... version, as also downgrade for some xorg packages.

I figure if it works in oneiric perhaps doing this works too but

------- it havent worked ----------

The best course of action is for everybody still affected by this issue to submit full details of this bug through ASUS's technical support website with a list of affected motherboards and processors and a link to this thread. In a best case scenario the fix would be simply adding the FX processor family to a subroutine, or debugging a little bit of assembly that doesn't run correctly on FX processors. I'm not a low level software engineer, so these are just guesses. Hopefully if enough people contact ASUS and other affected manufacturers we'll see a fix soon.

Just to add a little more to this:

Currently running on ArchLinux,

Motherboard: Sabertooth 990FX (bios: 0901)
Kernel: 3.3.2-1-ARCH
Driver: 295.40
CPU: Phenom II X4 965

With both IOMMU and the 64Mb option enabled, the xorg driver fails to load, giving the same error as mentioned before. If I pass "iommu=pt" as a boot option, Xorg starts up correctly.

"iommu=pt" allows my system to boot too. But I'm not sure the IOMMU is being used fully when this parameter is specified. See the notes on this patchset http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/885604.

If I'm reading the notes there correctly, the 'pt' option means that all devices are registered to a special domain that allows them to access all system memory, unless something else comes along later and moves them into a different domain. This makes me think that the driver isn't registering something correctly and so when the card tries to initialize, it is trying to access memory that it doesn't have the right privileges to (something that I had already wondered about having saw a page fault error just before the initialization fails)

Note: It also looks like Nvidia are only supporting a small subset of devices for this type of functionality anyway, based on the details here: http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Xen_VGA_Pas...splay_adapters

"Linux: RmInitAdapter fails with intel_iommu=on on 3.2 kernels " fix will be available in next release of 295 driver.

Can confirm that the iommu=pt option works with 3.4.x kernel and 295.53 , can see my uglyface on the desktop now
Without it its blackscreen and a hard lockup , wich is weird cuz since opensuse-12.1 got the iommu in bios set to ON
Can say it worked flawless with 3.1.x kernels then no iommu=pt is needed
