Default Re: VDPAU testing tool

I have installed a Sparkle 8400GS PCI in this machine. (PCI, not PCI-e)

Before the 8400GS I had an FX 5200 which could play AVI's and ISO's through VLC satisfactory. MP4 and H264 was non-satisfactory. Many freezes on MP4, 1 FPS with H264.

I installed the 8400GS, and H264 still is displayed at 1 FPS. Worse is, that oridinary videos like AVI's and ISO's have become unwatchable as well due to many freezes. H264 is at a 1280x720 resolution.

VLC 1.1.12 is using hardware acceleration, and when started from the command line it confirms that HW acceleration is used. There is however NO difference at all between HW assisted and non HW assisted performance.

When I play movies thru MPlayer, (-vo vdpau) mplayer tells me the computer is too slow, and audio lags about 10 seconds.

I am running the same VLC on an Intel Atom 1,6 GHz with NVIDIA Ion. That decoding is fully satisfactory.

Below the test results for qvdpautest for the 8400GS.

Code:

I think a few more details about HW and SW (distro and relevant package versions) might help a bit. Perhaps a log file or two (kernel and X.org). Output from mplayer might reveal something. Possibly even the result from
Code:
nvidia-bug-report.sh
.

Default Re: VDPAU testing tool

As I primarily use mplayer, I will comment on your use of that.

It isn't sufficient to specify the video output driver (-vo vdpau), you need to specify the codec as well (-vc ffh264vdpau) in this case.

You can add the follwing to your ~/.mplayer/config:
Code:
vo=vdpau,
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,
This will force mplayer to always attempt to use VDPAU output and codecs before trying any other. The trailing comma tells mplayer to try detecting other codecs, if the ones you specified doesn't work with that particular file.

I hope this helps.

Thumbs up Re: VDPAU testing tool

Bingo!

Mplayer plays it smooth and flawlessly now. So that validates the hardware, the driver and vdpau, right? I don't feel as comfortable with mplayer as with vlc, so it is either to familiarize me with mplayer, or have a serious talk with vlc.

Thanks a lot this really saved my day.

Default ASUS Fanless Gt430 card (single-slot!)

Okay, the GT430 has 96 "stream processors", similar to the Gt240, except it's a "fermi" card, whatever that means.

The difference between the (fermi) GT430 and (non-fermi) GT240 is huge in vdpautest -- the older card spanks it pretty hard on most tests:
