Hello.
I can modify fanspeed using nvclock ( very simple ). But I can't using nvidia-settings. Code:
nvidia-settings -t --query [fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed 30 Code:
nvidia-settings -a "[fan:0]/GPUFanControlState=1" -a "[fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=47" Code:
nvidia-settings -t --query [fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed 30 I am not using X11 configuration file. I have install the driver by hand following the readme My config : Opensuse 12.1 Linux 3.1.9-1.4-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 27 08:55:10 UTC 2012 (efb5ff4) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux nvidia-settings-270.41.06-1.36.x86_64 nvidia-computeG02-290.10-13.1.x86_64 x11-video-nvidiaG02-290.10-13.1.x86_64 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-290.10_k3.1.0_1.2-12.1.x86_64 |

You need a xorg.conf with coolbits to change fan settings Code:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# RPM Fusion - nvidia-xorg.conf
#
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "Coolbits" "4"
EndSection

Hello.
1°) actually I read that on various forums, but why nvclock can manage without xorg.conf file ? 2°) How to convert my actual configuration to a full xorg.conf file ?

"Full" xorg.conf is a thing of the past. All you need what leigh123linux gave you and *only* that.

Seems not for nvidia-settings program.
nvclock has nothing to do with xorg.conf as I can modify fan speed without any xorg.conf and there is none on my box. I will try your suggestion.

Most of the stuff nvidia-settings puts into xorg.conf either does nothing (the InputDevice sections), is redundant, or the worst case scenario - screws things up.

Actually, putting:
Options "Coolbits" "5" in the xorg.conf enables the user to both overclock and set the fan speed in nvidia-settings in 302.07 and probably earlier versions. 302.07 will even find the optimal overclock speed for you. Very nice. NVClock isn't needed anymore.

By default the fan run too fast and is noisy. So I set the speed (via nvclock for the moment) as necessary via cron. My only problem is to remove error log from the kernel because of some memory usage ( rsyslog do that automatically for me). I was just wondering why nvclock can manage the fan without the help of xorg.conf and why nvida-settings not.

As it is too noisy I will return to previous version if I did not find any solution on the web.
