I tried the 302.07 beta: same bug, I still can not control fan speed and the fan is at 100% at xorg start. Please help! Do you need another bug report?

Just a thought: have you tried to control the fan speed the indirect way? What I mean is via PowerMizer. Works fine here (you can only hear the GPU fan if a GL operation is running, system and PSU fans are louder under normal operation).
System: Dell PWS 360 with GF Quadro 3000 (basically a GF FX 5900 with 1280x1024 *and* 1920x1200, openSUSE 12.1 with 173.14.31).

Do you test it with Quadro FX 3700?

I'm having the same problem with my GT8800: as soon as X starts, the fan starts at a very noisy level and won't go off anymore. (openSUSE 12.1, driver 295.40; 290.10 worked fine)

The same thing is happening in Vista with 295.73.

Video BIOS: 62.92.16.00.00.

I believe that I am experiencing the same issue, using Kubuntu 12.04. The fan is not on 100% of the time, but easily 80-90% of the time. Prior to upgrading to 12.04, the fan did not run nearly as much.

I have tried several different driver versions, and am currently using 302.11, with an onboard Ion2 (GT218 rev a2) GPU.

This is a HIGHLY annoying problem.

Default Re: GPU fan always at 100%, can not change the thermal settings

I just installed the beta release 302.17 and the bug is still here (look at my video, in the first post): fan speed is maximum at xorg start (very noisy) and in nvidiasettings, I can not change change fan speed, despite I put the coolbitsettings to 4 in xorg.conf. If I try with command line, no error appeared but that does nothing.

Code:
$
$ nvidia-settings -q fans

1 Fan on tipingouin-home:0

    [0] tipingouin-home:0[fan:0] (Fan 0)

$ nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1

  Attribute 'GPUFanControlState' (tipingouin-home:0[gpu:0]) assigned value 1.

$ nvidia-settings -a [fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=30

  Attribute 'GPUCurrentFanSpeed' (tipingouin-home:0[fan:0]) assigned value 30.
but the fan speed is higher and didn't change.
This feature does not work anymore with my 8800 GT with drivers out after the 275.43 (works with 290.10 too).

Please help, my computer is too noisy with my fan GPU always at maximum.Without a solution from you, I have to use nouveau, but I'm a gamer and nouveau is bad to play 3D games.
Thanks for your help.

You can't reproduce this issue, but I can...So I can send you more information, ask me to give you result of test command or from log, whatever it could help you to find what causes this bug. And remember this bug is not present in the version drivers 275.43 and 290.10.

Default Re: GPU fan always at 100%, can not change the thermal settings

This bug is not specific to his motherboard. Here is a thread I started on the same bug: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=186171

I set Coolbits to 4, but when I change the fan speed setting, the speed doesn't change at all. And it's not running at 100%, even though nvidia-xsettings says it's at 100%. My system is overheating regularly, causing the BIOS to reduce the CPU frequency from 2.2 GHz to 800 MHz.

None of this happened until I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. I've been running Ubuntu on this laptop since 8.04.

Dell XPS M1330
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
driver version 295.20+

I guess I'm going to have to further downgrade the driver. I hope it works, but eventually I guess I'll run into it not working with newer versions of X or the kernel. It's already giving me trouble with DKMS.

NVIDIA, please fix this. This is a completely new regression in the drivers--it's worked fine for YEARS until now. Someone broke something in the drivers, and it's causing real problems with hardware. It's probably shortening my laptop's life (this is one that had a BIOS update come out to force higher fan speeds due to the faulty 8400 chipset packaging, but now the fan isn't running at full speed).

If you can't reproduce it, do this: get a laptop with an 8400M GS, install Ubuntu 12.04, install 295.20 or later, and boom, problem.
