If X is running on nouveau or nvidia, then you are not using Optimus. Maybe the laptop has a hardware mux which is currently set to Nvidia. Or it's not an Optimus laptop. Those are the only options.

Not all GTX 600M series laptops are Optimus.

For example, none of the Asus G series are and neither is the Lenovo Y580.
