Default Re: NVIDIA, please release updated 290.xx drivers for new kernels and X.org versions

maybe nvidia should hire some programmers that can programm or open source the driver instead of letting users beg for fixes of some allready long known regressions ... instead they call their 295 release "long-lived branch release" - at best this is a pre beta release ....

i can reproduce crashes and hard freezes with this two cards and all releases after 290.10

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce GT 230] (rev a2)

In new releases NVIDIA just tells us to stop using framebuffer:

Code:
NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console on the primary VGA device.
The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver requires the use of a text-mode VGA console.
Use of other console drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in corruption and stability
problems, and is not supported.

Aaron, can you at least tell us if it's possible to see updated 290.xx drivers with no new features/fixes/etc, but just made compatible with new X.org releases and kernels?

Maybe they'll give us an nvidiafb console driver.

If the license allows it.

No, we will not be doing any more 290.* releases.

That's a great pity. I wonder if you could release updated 290.xx drivers unofficially - you have access to your drivers code base so I doubt it's a problem for you. And I'm quite sure Jen-Hsun Huang doesn't dictate which drivers are LTS are which are not, so it's just a question of your personal decision.

I do hope you'll reconsider your decision about dropping support for 290.xx drivers.

Please.

I can confirm using the nvidia-304.37 driver on Gentoo seems to have fixed the console regression.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Nvidia guys for fixing this.
It's great to be able to utilise the consoles again.
I am running a partly unstable system, so sometimes I need to access a console in order to kill a nasty process. I can do that now.
Thanks again.
