Default Mageia 2 Cannot Install 71.86.15 for Riva TNT/TNT2

After having fits figuring out how to disable nouveau, and finally succeeding, I am no closer to getting a working NVIDIA driver on Mageia 2. The nouveau driver was kernel panicking with regularity.

$ rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-firmware-20120219-1.mga2
kernel-server-devel-latest-3.3.6-2.mga2
kernel-source-latest-3.3.6-2.mga2
kernel-server-3.3.6-2.mga2-1-1.mga2
kernel-userspace-headers-3.3.6-1.mga2
kernel-source-3.3.6-2.mga2-1-1.mga2
kernel-server-devel-3.3.6-2.mga2-1-1.mga2
kernel-server-latest-3.3.6-2.mga2

I've done many an nvidia driver install on Mandriva, so I'm no stranger to this. I have no idea what do do to get around this. Usually it just works. Any clues?

The 71xx driver hasn't been updated for a long time now. I don't think you'll get it running on a modern distro. Just use nouveau.

I guess you missed the part about "The nouveau driver was kernel panicking with regularity".

I guess we define "a long time now" differently:

Check the changelog of that release. It just adds a check, nothing significant. The release before that was in 2010, it added support for "recent kernels", whatever that meant in 2010. Two years is a long time in the open-source world.

If you have issues with nouveau, then that's what you should focus on. Report to nouveau devs. In the mean time, the nv driver is still around and works for pre-Fermi cards, so that's another option you have.
