Thanks for your feedback. It shows the issue is specific to my installation. Either a hardware issue or some peculiar software constellation. My bets are on the former. Unfortunately there are not enough clues as to where it might make sense to spend money on a replacement.

I will try the new secondlife viewer version when it is available on the download site. However, I am not getting my hopes up that it will make a difference.

Will be back in a couple of weeks after my holiday.

Please also let me know, if this issue is reproducing at some particular map or destination and doing some particular activity.

Thanks.
back from my holiday, tried with current beta version 3.3.3.258769, but the bug is still there.

afaics it is not specififc to any sim or activity, just the graphics settings mentioned in my previous posting. You can also trigger the bug when logging on to the testing grid (aditi).

it still requires a working installation of the SL viewer, and a user account. You then go into Preferences -> Advanced and select the option "Show Grid Selection at login". This will allow you to log on to different grids. The grid for usual game play (although people say SL is not a game ) is called Agni. The grid called Aditi is used for testing purposes (both for teh server software and people trying out stuff in-world).
