Default Issues: Unity 3D in Ubuntu 12.04 with 8800 GTS with nvidia driver 304.43 and earlier

I have been having lockups (X server at 100% when checked over ssh from another machine), screen flickering, windows turning black, when running Unity 3D in Ubuntu 12.04 64bit with a 8800 GTS. These problems have been consistent with a number of driver versions, including the latest, 304.43.

I do not have any of these issues using Unity 3D on my other 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 machines with newer nvidia graphics cards when doing the same kind of tasks. To reproduce the issue, I only need to start loading and full screening a number of applications and I quickly start having problems. Additionally, once the problems have started, I get low FPS in OpenGL applications. Sometimes ctrl+alt+F1 and logging in and out of a tty will improve the problem for a while.

Scrolling in various windows text can also become very slow and X server uses 100% CPU (e.g. nvidia-settings > OpenGL/GLX Information).

These display problems happen at the same time as I get these kind of messages in the syslog (each flicker of the display produces one of these):

I wonder if it's related to http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?t=177732? I get those Xid 13 errors on my 540M card when running 3D games, although in my case it freezes the process and often locks up the kernel.

If you haven't already, I would submit your bug report log to linux-bugs@nvidia.com.

I didn't yet because it didn't say to do that in the sticky post. Does that lead to a faster response or just annoy some devs that I'm hoping will look into this?

Thanks,

Glassmaster.

Due to a recent string of embarrassing disasters, this forum has been abandoned by NVIDIA staff. NVIDIA is in the process of rebuilding its own forums, which will have it's own in-house section for Linux.

In the meantime, bugs have to be submitted to the e-mail address.

Don't hold your breath! I also emailed them but haven't even got a receipt acknowledgement.

As a software developer with a mailing list myself, I can see their side too. If they take an interest in the bug, great, if not, well I tried.

I browsed this forum a bit and it sounds like it has been a long and frustrating road for you in getting some attention to your issue.

Hey, the more the merrier! Assuming that they don't just send all email to the junk folder, the more people that report it, the better. And it does seem that more people are running into it with the latest drivers now, so maybe finally nvidia will wake up and take notice.

I do find it hard to believe that a company like nvidia don't have a proper bug reporting system that lets them interact with end users, though. These forums are fine if someone has a question about how to do something that the general community can fix (especially if the devs don't even bother reading the forums), but nvidia need a proper support mechanism for cases where there are bugs that only they can fix.

Even if they did, there is no guarantee a given bug would be fixed, but I agree it would nice to get some confirmation that they are looking into it.

Well, I think they have a moral obligation to fix frequently-occurring and catastrophic bugs like this one. After all, it locks up one or more CPUs, kills X, and even requires a hard reboot. nvidia used to have a good reputation for linux support, but they certainly don't any more with the farce that is optimus and then ignoring this bug for so long.

I guess they could always give me a refund and recompense me for my time and effort trying to workaround and report it!

The Optimus thing is out of their control.

Your problem might be configuration related. Maybe they can't reproduce it or can't fix it without blowing something else up. Can you use a different distro?
