Asking NVIDIA to invest resources into this is kind of wasteful IMO. It'd be cheaper for the economy as a whole to just upgrade hardware if you really need to use the latest software tech.
I bought my card new serveral years ago,and I bought it because it was what I needed for my mother board. It would make more sense to keep this stuff working. That would be good for the economy and the local land fill. My video worked just fine on ubuntu 11.10 and mint 12.It now does not work on 12.04 because of one minor change to xorg.( not nvidea fault). The point is this a very good card and will take anything that I have trown at it.I have not yet seen any good reason why I should not exspect driver to be updated and to work.

But the GeForce 210 PCIe, e.g., is regularly on sale after rebate for $10. I picked one up myself (to replace a 7950 GX2) and it's perfect for a composited desktop.

But okay... say it's $20.

What's cheaper... you buying an updated card for $20 or NVIDIA spending five figures to go through all the rigmarole of updating their drivers?
My mother board has both apg and pci , thats the my point. By sugesting someone get a new card would mean getting a new mother board or a new computer. Sorry I cant do that I live on social sucurity. I also might ad that I have a degree in computer science, I cant see that just a few simple changes woul cost that much. If nvidia does not want to do they could allow xorg to do it.

Good to see the Linux section up again!

Bumping to keep this thread alive. Still hoping that the developpers can (and are allowed to) find some time for a compatibility-update for the 96.xx.xx driver.

agreed
this older hardware is in laptops or on fully functional motherboards and will not be replaced for newer drivers
Nvidia should support this older hardware to avoid alienating many users.

Come on, update the 96xx drivers or declare it EOL. Do not give us a false hope.

I emailed support about a week ago and they replied very quickly that they have no intentions to update the 96xx driver. We are just out of luck.

That is strange. I don't know with whom you emailed, but there is actually great news:

So a big Thank You to Aaron (& others?) and NVidia for updating this driver!
