Yes, booting with thermal.off=1 was my initial approach but later on I've found that just disabling thermal monitoring in gkrellm + reboot does the trick. And yes, that means that nvsettings' thermal monitor is still enabled and working.

On the other hand, without thermal.off=1 obviously one runs the risk of other services/daemons re-enabling the thermal interface (loading kernel modules etc.). I suspect that a "clean" solution would be to trace down the offending kernel module and just blacklist it.

BTW: after 3+ days with lots of OGL gaming and xorg+composite experimentation, I've yet to see a single Xid message
