Both have their advantages, for large units of measurement such as distances across countries then miles make more sense, along with pints for alcohol. For engineering purposes metric wins hands down.

Saying 1000 miles or 1609 km isn't much of a difference, I think.

Imagine using an imperial system for digital storage... Instead of kilobytes, gigabytes, etc., you would have 1 randomname1 = 972 bytes, 1 randomname2 = 7 randomname1s, and 1 randomname3 = 29 randomname2s, and so forth.
