Default why does this happen in win 8 and win 7

ever since I got my ivy bridge setup, windows 8 and even when I used windows 7, windows explorer crashes every so often and asks for error reporting. I have taken out all of the system tray items that get shut down when the crash happens. Can anyone explain this?
