Smile Advice needed

Hey Nvnews.net I hope all is well with everyone today :-D I've been out of the gaming sub-culture for awhile; however, recently got back into it- and the new motherboard/processor stuff is slightly confusing to me. I could really use some general honest advice.

My current system is

EVGA Classified x58 (760)
Core I7 920 (Bloomfield D0 rev) @ 4.2 ghz overlock with Thermalright Venomous X cooler and a 120 Dell Server Fan
1x Western Digital Black (Os is Windows 7 Pro) and 1x Western Digital Green (Storage)
18gig DDR 1600MHZ (3x4gig 3x2gig tri-channel)
2x PHY GeForce 770gtx OC 4GB
PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 1200

As you can see, when I built the computer it was a while ago (outside of the video cards.) I believe 2009 or 2010.

My question, is it worth upgrading the motherboard/processer to a new X87chip and a Intel 4770k if my only interest in gaming at 1080P 60hz. In other words, if it costs me 700 bucks to upgrade to a decent mobo, processor and heatsink- is it worth the money?

It's easy to say "Oh read some reviews" and I have been, but a lot of the newer stuff is beyond me.

Thank you very much for your time, expertise and thank you in advance for any advice.

I was able to meet up with a gentlemen in the Tampa Bay area that was kind enough to let me "borrow" his 4770k @4.3ghz (Asus Z87 mobo). My only question was gaming @ 1080P.

In general, frame rates were faster between 5-10% depending on the game. The biggest difference was in Crysis 3 (Highest possible settings, no AA). On my 920 @4ghz, the lowest FPS was 47fps whereas on the 4770k the lowest was 54fps. Both systems averaged well over the necessary 60fps and it was rare either system dropped below the magic number.

Overall, I determined it was not worth the money; however, this new Devil's Canyon chip @5ghz could easily be worth the upgrade..if the rumors are true of 5ghz on air.

You may get better bang on the buck by upgrading the video card than a whole system overhaul (CPU+motherboard+ GPU+extra).

Most games are GPU bound and not CPU bound

most reviewers samples that reviewers are getting for devil's canyon are max overclocking on air to about 4.6-4.8ghz. They do say however that they more than likely got poor binned samples. If you went for a cpu, get a z97 board and a 4790k. That way you have a longer term upgrade since z97 is supposed to be broadwell ready (14nm process cpu due out at xmas). Or if you feel since your experience with the 4770k was somewhat limited, get yourself a gtx 780 or a r9 290 in terms of a video card. Again, you get a longer term upgrade to last you for quite sometime to come.

I wouldn't touch a mined card with a 10 foot pole. From what I gather, miners OC the heck out of the cards lessening their lifespan much faster than regular oc'ing to get the fastest mining possible. If I bought r9, I would buy new. Full warranty and you get a card you know hasn't been oc'ed to next to having little life left to it.
