Default 5328 + Mandrake 9.2 problems

I'm running:

P4 2.4Ghz 478
1024 MB PC2100
MSI Geforce 4 Ti4200 64Mb DDR
Mandrake 9.2

Whenever I try to use the Nvidia .run file, everything goes fine. Then I go into the XConfig and change the driver to nvidia. Whenever I try to startx, it won't load. I can't go telinit 5 either. But if I got back and cahnge the driver to nv in the XConfig file, everything is fine. The only difference is that now that I have installed the .run file, I can no longer access Chromium or TuxRacer. They used to run, just not very well (slow from no drivers). Here is what my log says:

Default Disable AGP

I had the same problem some time before. After I installed the nVidia 5328 Driver, the X Server failed to load. I edited very much things in XF86Config-4 and I found out that if AGP is disabled, the X-Server loaded and 3d-accel. was enabled (of course at lower speed).
You can try to disable AGP by adding the following line into Section "Device":
Option "NvAGP" "0"

On my system, it then looks so:

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "1:0:0"
Option "DPMS"
Option "NoLogo"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"
Option "NvAGP" "0"
EndSection

Try it, I hope it works for you
Greetings from germany, Gasmann

That didn't work. I think it's something to do with the kernel module, but I'm at a loss of how to fix it. Also, I'd like to add that I have this problem with ALL of the .run files. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. (I'm about to beat my head on the wall.

Is your compiled nvidia kernel module loaded?

I had this problem for years.....
The official solution of the problem is in the README of the drivers and says this:

Q: My X server fails to start, and my XFree86 log file contains the error:

"(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!"

A: Nothing will work if the NVIDIA kernel module doesn't function
properly. If you see anything in the X log file like "(EE)
NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!" then
there is most likely a problem with the NVIDIA kernel module.
First, you should verify that if you installed from rpm that
the rpm was built specifically for the kernel you are using.
You should also check that the module is loaded ('/sbin/lsmod');
if it is not loaded try loading it explicitly with 'insmod' or
'modprobe' (be sure to exit the X server before installing a new
kernel module). If you receive errors about unresolved symbols,
then the kernel module has most likely been built using header files
for a different kernel revision than what you are running. You can
explicitly control what kernel header files are used when building
the NVIDIA kernel module with the --kernel-include-dir option (see
`sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg1.run --advanced-options`
for details).

Please note that the convention for the location of kernel header
files changed approximately at the time of the 2.4.0 kernel release,
as did the location of kernel modules. If the kernel module fails to
load properly, modprobe/insmod may be trying to load an older kernel
module (assuming you've upgraded). cd'ing into the directory with
the new kernel module and doing 'insmod ./nvidia.o' may help.

Another cause may be that the /dev/nvidia* device files may be missing.

Finally, the NVIDIA kernel module may print error messages indicating
a problem -- to view these messages please check /var/log/messages, or
wherever syslog is directed to place kernel messages. These messages
are prepended with "NVRM".

The most common problem is of trying to load a kernel module not built for your kernel version. To be sure(99.9%) that the module is the correct the safiest way is installing the source files of your current kernel and try the files from http://www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/ .Pick the file for your kernel
(2.4 or 2.6) and install it.During installation it may ask the path of your kernel source(I cannot give you the default path because it may vary from distribution to distribution) or it may find it automatically. After installation do all steps as you used to and everything will (probably be fine). At last trythe command 'uname - r' in the console to see your kernel version.Hope it works!!

Default Still doesn't work

I reinstalled Mandrake and I followed your directions on a clean install. Now it just says that it can't build the Nvidia kernel.... So, any ideas?

PS -- I'm using 2.4.22-10

Are you sure that you installed the correct version of your kernel source??Are you sure the path to your kernel source is correct during the driver installation??Maybe this weekend I will try installing Mandrake-9.2 to see what happens. Please give as much info as you can....

Make sure that your kernel matches your kernel source:

uname -r should be the same as

/usr/src/linux- "uname output"

also in Mandrake 9.2 there may be a soft link called linux in /usr/src/ this should point to the directory named after uname -r

finally mandrake has agpgart compiled into the kernel, depending on your kernel version agpart might not be compatiable, you can force the card to go around this with the option:

Option "NvAGP" "2"
