newbie's nvidia driver questions

Hello there,

Last week, I just got my AMD64 system with
Nvidia FX5700 graphics chipset (ASUS graphics
card) and Nvidia nforce 3 150 chipset on the
Gigabyte GA-K8N motherboard.

After installing Win2k on my hda and RedHead8 Linux
on my hdb1,2,3... I have encountered the following
problems, and hope you can give me some advice.

1) During RH8 installation, I couldn't find the video
card FX5700 choice; hence I chose "Nvidia Quadro"
and 128MB vram (largest ram size option).

Then I logged in as root, and look at my video
setup in the KDE environment. The video card's
256MB on board memory is recognized by RH8,
but the card is still defined as "Quadro".

Will this cause me any problems? If so, how can
I fix this? How can I ensure that RH8 fully utilizes
my FX5700 vcard capabilities?

2) After RH8 installation, the on board AC97 CODEC
sound chips is not recognized by RH8 (i.e. missing
/dev/dsp); but it works fine in Win2K environment.
How can I fix this problem?

Hi,

1. Redhat 8 is a bit old, your FX 5700 wasn't around when it came out. The solution is to download and install drivers from nvidia.com, and configure your system.

2. You may need to place yourself in the audio group to get sound. Check the permissions of /dev/dsp. If that's OK, see if a sound driver is loaded: lsmod. You can check which driver should be loaded by:

less /proc/pci

and look for "audio controller"s. Hopefully loading the driver is only a modprobe away.

Thank you for your reply. I'm still a bit confused,
and wonder if you can give me some advice.

(1st of all, I'm a Linux newbie; hence I have some
linux commands questions to ask you...)

I've realized that I probably need to download and
install the IA64 drivers from Nvidia website. These
will be for my motherboard with nforce 3 150 chipset
and FX5700 graphics card.

(For the AC97 CODEC on my motherboard)

I've downloaded and tar -xvzf my rpm file (the nforce
rpm file) from Nvidia. The command creates a folder
called "nforce" and have a few folders inside. The
one I'm trying to work on is the "nvaudio" folder and
the files inside. There is a Makefile and some other
files with .h or .o extensions. At this point, how can
I install my audio driver?

(I was assuming when I installed the driver from
the enclosed CDROM, the software would work
for boh Win2k and Linux environments...)

(I guess I would have to download and install the
driver software in the Linux RH8 platform separately)

Also, with the "uname -r" command; I've found the
kernel version is 2.4.18; instead of the supported
(agpgart) version requirement of 2.4.20 or 2.4.21...
Can I still use this driver? I'm assuming I only need
the audio driver from this rpm file.

(Then download and install the graphics driver files
after fixing my AC97 CODEC problem).

As I don't have an nForce board I can only guess that after unpacking the drivers you take a look at the files inside and see if there is a readme or install. Failing that there is a Makefile so you can type make.

agpgart: if you don't have kernel support for it use Option "NvAGP" "1" in the device section of your XF86Config(-4). But my system is much faster with NvAGP 2. Your mileage may vary.
