SuSE 8.2 Pro
NVIDIA drivers 1.0-4496
XFree86 Version 4.3.0
If I make an innocuous edit in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config (e.g. change a single character in the ModelName in the Monitor section) and then issue the command "init 3" to kill the X-server, when it reverts to a simple console all I get is flashing garbage on the screen (i.e. the VGA mode console is not restored properly). After cycling the power if I restore the original /etc/X11/XF86Config from a backup I still get the flashing garbage after issuing an "init 3" command. The only way I have found to restore the original behaviour is to re-install the NVIDIA driver.
Since I need to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config to get my S-Video output going, can anybody tell me what the is going on. How do I stop the VGA console mode from being corrupted?
