i am using Geforce 2 mx400

i keep getting this error on startup
X won't start. It keeps changing Driver back to default. "nvidia"---> "nv"

(EE) Failed to initialize NVIDIA kernal module
(EE) ****************aborting******************
(EE) Screens found, but none have usable config.

here is a copy of my /etc/x11/xf86.config file

Assuming that you can get the driver to work once you've changed the file, at least until you reboot, you could keep the file from changing by making it read only to everyone. Hopefully the change won't take place.

As root: chmod 444 /etc/X11/XF86Config

The reason this file is changing I do not know. The config says you're using redhat, but which version I don't know yet (RH9?). There was another related post on the forum about a Mandrake system constantly making changes to the X config, but no resolution to the problem that I remember.

The system should not be changing that file unless the redhat-config-xfree86 program is run.

Thank you so much for your reply... I didnt' try what you told me becuase i got thinking... I did red hat 9 updates including kernel!!! I installed the drivers on the last kernel... then updated... i never installed the driver for the new kernel so it wouldn't work. When i reinstalled, it had to build something for the driver... Any how, it works great now.

Still thank you for taking your time to reply.
