Default well, new ATI driver release, and I got exactly what I expected

a huge *edited* in my mouth, their linux drivers still suck the only new feature of the 3.7.1's (after two months of waiting after the last release) is 9800 XT support.

Bah! I now have a 9700 for sale until I get a 5900.

Edite By MUYA : Can u refrain from using expletives thanks!

ATI's driver support is pretty laughable, if you use Linux alot like me nvidia is there way to go.

Oh god tell me about it.

Ya know, the cards are really powerful and all....but when you get outpaced running a 9700 by a 5200fx....it starts getting pretty damn pathetic.

Honestly, my old GeForce3 rendered faster.

I've made my own timedemo in RTCW MP at (BS) server and tested it on both Linux and WinXP with exactly the same settings.

WinXP: 175FPS
RH FC1: 150FPS

Radeon9800 flashed to R9800Pro, AthlonXP1700@2145Mhz(11x195).

And I think that the textures are nicer and more sharp in Linux than in WinXP. Drivers used were 3.7.0. UT2004 demo runs bad, RTCW ET runs good, but not nearly as good as in WinXP; with some flashing textures as well.

I will also try 3.2.8-6 drivers as it is said that they are better.

To be perfectly honest, Quake3 games seem to run quite respectably in Linux. I think the limitations there are more compiler related than driver. But as you get into more modern engines like UT's, and trying out newer technologies you see that ATI is crippled for things like lacking support for certain extensions, namely VBO's and PBO's. In games like Savage, you really see the hit there. It'd be nice if ATI would branch out some more and support more extensions in Linux, then I think you'd see some admirable results.
