Default VIA Chipsets and nVidia.

Ok, I have the VIA chipset in my SMP box. The chipsets and where I found them in /proc are:

VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C693A/694x [Apollo PRO133x] <- /proc/iomem
VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] <- /proc/ioports

I'm not sure which one is significant.

Looking over the os-registry.c I found that there is a problem with VIA chipsets and AGP x4, requiring nVidia to downgrade the throughput to x2.

What problems are we talking about? Lockups? Seg faults? Does this occur only under known certain conditions? I'd like to get this up to x4 if I can, but I want to know what I can expect if it fails. This knowledge helps me to weight the benefit/cost decision.

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer to your question. I would ask that you test with both the 2.6 agpgart and nvagp and report your findings. It is possible that using the kernel's agpgart resolves the stability issues at 4x. I suspect that you will find few Via SMP users out there for apples-to-apples config comparison though.

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo
