Thats one thing I haven't done,

Just because Nvidia is now doing well in futuremark, crowing about it. I am going to remain consistent and ignore that bench mark. I wish they would do the same, I really don't give a rat's arse how they do in that test. Now the Far cry, and Halo tests were impressive.

Seems the R420 will perform at least equally in 3dmark2003. Some rumors state 15K+ (not sure about the system however).

On the transition to 8x/6x modes, the graphics cards on NVIDIA GPUs don’t practically change the look of the image. The ATI RADEON 9800 XT makes good use of the increased number of samples in this example and smoothes the jaggies better, producing a nicer-looking image. Note that the images produced by the NV38 and the NV40 are absolutely identical, so both chips seem to have the same method of 8x FSAA.

Quote:
The three cards provide the same-quality 2x FSAA on nearly-vertical lines;
The GeForce 6800 and the RADEON 9800 XT are much better in the 4x FSAA mode than the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra;
The RADEON 9800 XT is unrivalled in the 8x/6x mode, using multisampling on 6 sub-pixels placed on a rotated grid, rather than a combination of supersampling and multisampling on ordered-grid sub-pixels.

Now let's add a and yet another postcount +1.

Great post CaiNaM

Honestly, we do all need to see what ATi offers up, but either way the NV40 is a comeback of biblical scale.

Amen on that brother.
I knew Nvidia HAD to make a come back this go around.

My hats off to nvidia. When the drivers get better look for big
performance jumps and better IQ.

What is it with people & graphics card bias, If you quote out of context then it's obvious you misunderstood my point. This could apply to ATI if it were the other way around, but it's not and until 9700 pro NVIDIA had it pretty easy in general, being able to give minor speed bumps and a few features on each product refresh cycle, then tweak drivers to give more later on. ATi wasn't even real competition, the 8500 being too little too late and the drivers were poor back then too.

The point I was making is if nvidia can pull out a seemingly very impressive card with major speed improvement like NV40 when they've been struggling to compete, it makes me ask why can't they do this each refresh cycle instead of giving us incremental speed bumps. Maybe it's just not possible?, or maybe they just like feeding little bits of the candy bar to suit themselves? It's a cyical way to look at it I know and that is why I said so...but I can't help thinking it.

So my point is:-

How long would it have been before we saw this card "Nv40" in this format, (speed), if it were not for ATI's, (possibly somewhat lucky), high performing 9700 / 9800 range? would it have been feed to us in smaller bite sized chunks?

I will always want faster cards sooner, so that newer games, (some poorly coded), can actually be played at a decent frame rate with all the features on. I do not really care who makes the hardware, I just want the fastest / best.

Competition is good for all, the worry of course is if ATI flop with R420, they might just pull out of 3D, and that is the last thing anyone should want..... one top end 3D card maker that has a monopoly..

Yep... Seems about right for me to.
With nvidia's drivers this card is alone going
to get better and better.

I bet the NV45 uses Low-k for better clock speeds.
But seeing how it's 222mil trans and 13nm I can see
why no one is getting any better than 450 out of them now.

Are you suggesting the 9700 was a great card by luck??? I hope not.

There is no doubt in my mind that the NV40 would not be the killer it is if it was not for ATi. No doubt about it. That is what competition is all about and why it is needed. Microsoft anyone?

Microsoft indeed. They want the browser market, just give IE out for free.

No I am saying 9700 pro / 9800 pro ARE great cards, and the 9700 pro was a big improvement over the Ti4600 when it came out, it was the first card that allowed AA to be used without performance adversely suffering, along with better image quality in 2D & 3D. As far as upgrades have impressed me through the years nothing obviously beats the Voodoo 1 over software only rendering before it, after that it was 9700 pro for me then geforce 2 GTS, (and that was mainly because it was what the GF1 DDR should have been to begin with).

I have had plenty of nvidia cards though the years, and liked them generally, I'm using an Msi 5900U atm and while it's fine, if I had to choose just one card atm, (nv40 not included), It would be 9800 pro / xt because it's simply the better card overall.... who the chipsets are created by dosen't come into it for me..

Seriously,

I ignore futuremark. I am very curious what the x800XT will do in Far Cry, and Halo. I'd like for Xbit to bench it with their 'next highly anticipated games' too.

Oh and the r300 was not luck. It was a much needed pimp slap to Nvidia. I am glad it happened. I want at least two truly competing companies.
