Default AMD64/5332, Unkillable Process & Unusable Consoles

MSI k8t FSR
Athlon64 3000
Gentoo amd64
Nvidia driver version 5332 for x86_64
Kernel 2.6.3 gentoo r2
Gainward GeForce FX 5700 Ultra
Graphics Bios rev: 04.36.20.23.00
Everything like APCI, PnP, AGP, etc, is whatever gentoo/my bios set as default.
XFre86 4.3.0 r5

Whenever an OpenGL program dies (segfault, etc), it becomes locked in an 'uninterruptable IO' state (as reported by ps) and can't be killed by any means. Once one of these processes have been created, X can no longer shut down cleanly, and I'm left with a single blinking cursor on an empty screen, and I can't shut down cleanly, forcing a hard reboot.

Also, once X is started, I can no longer switch to any virtual terminals, as I end up with a distorted display. This also effects the console display on shutdown after starting X.

I've seen mentions to these problems in other posts, but any solutions posted haven't been too clear to me.

I'm new to linux but I've done a lot of OpenGL development, so I should be able to put together some test cases, or similar if needed (once I have time...)

Thanks for any help.

I am having the same problem -- same kernel, same X, FX 5200, different motherboard... no solution here yet either.

Which problem, the garbled console or the unkillable processes? I think I've come up with a partial solution for the latter (although I haven't tested exactly what conditions it still happens, it happens much less frequently)
