Unhappy Performance problems - FX5600-TX

Greetings all. This is my first post.

My problem is:
-----
demonen@z0rz:~$ ssystem -bench

252.02 frames/sec

demonen@z0rz:~$ glxgears
7376 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1475.200 FPS
8050 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1610.000 FPS
(repeat until insane)
-----
I feel this is WAY too low for my card and my system.
I used to get alot higher scores than this with my old Ti4200 card, but that card actually died from overclocking...

anyway:
I've had some trouble with /usr/lib/tls/* aswell since the nVidia installer insists on putting stuff there and my 2.4.x kernel does not agree.
I can't run UT2k3/4 while that directory is there, so I've removed it.

BTW:
-----
demonen@z0rz:~$ uname -a
Linux z0rz.net 2.4.22TheDemmyKernel #2 Sun Dec 7 23:51:36 CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux
-----
The current nVidia driver is 4349, but that changes every hour or so while I test and prod trying to make it go faster.

Please let me know what logs, config files, command outputs and otherwise abundant information you would want to know in order to help.

This is in 24Bit depth nearly normally for your card. In 16Bit not. I was also shocked, when I put in my new FX5700 after long using my fast Ti4200 with higher scores up2 ~6500 FPS and now ~4400 FPS.

I dont know if Debian use TLS/NPTL, now. Too long not more using Debian... But the nVidia installer should see if your Debian glibc use it or not. And I can remind me that the tls libs from XFree86 for the DRI in /usr/X11R6/lib/ was here a bad choice with the ready nV binary driver and the tls libgl* in /usr/lib/tls/* are from nVidia.
Maybe putting /usr/lib/tls in /etc/ld.so.conf (ldconfig after) helps you.

And if you want a better performance for the desktop or gaming, you should install an actual 2.6.5 kernel from:

http://www.backports.org/debian/dists/

Regards,
Marcus

Hmm.... it's NORMAL for a brand new (sort of anyway), expencive card to be slower than the previous generation?
Is this a driver issue?

I'd like to upgrade to 2.6.x very much, but I have other considerations on this box than games and desktop horseplay.

All the stuff that were supposed to find /usr/lib/tls/ DID find it, and deemed them "not OpenGL Drivers" or whatnot, so I assume my current Debian dows not support TLS.

Maybe a more featurful card as more for speed. I had avoid all the 5600 line.
And when Im right, the XT is a lower/cheaper card of the 5600 serie.

And that is? 2.6.5 is a stable main kernel with many improvements over 2.4 and newer drivers... Also when many people are not using/recommending the 2.6 for production systems at this time, its much more stable and reliably as the other releases of 2.0/2.4. in the past.

Marcus

Oh well...
Can you recomend me a card that gives more polys/second?
I'm not talking about the hype stuff or the "more bang for the buck" stuff.
I'm talking about an actual card that will give actual performance on my actual system.

As for the 2.4.x stuff: I'm currently rewriting my system tools to respect 2.6.x kernels, but until I have the time to complete my system monitor and other stuff that assumes 2.4.x the upgrade will have to wait.
