Mike,

Have you tried booting with "noapic" ?

I just tried mine with that and all my problems with the SMP kernel went away. I'll still having that quiver / flicker problem, but I'll probably just start another thread about it...

I'm running Mandrake 10.0 on a new Alienware with the 5336 drivers without problem (ok, some problems, but not appropriate to this thread). Anyway, I found that the only way I could get it to work was by setting the "NvAgp" setting to "0". I suggest you give that a whirl and see if it works.

I apologize, it looks like I was wrong. While it's true that when I first installed the machine using the 4496 drivers, I had to set NvAgp to 0 in order for it to work, it appears that's not the case with the 5336 drivers. I'm able to set NvAgp to 1 (use nVidia's AGP drivers) and it works fine.

I might ask what monitor size and resoultion you're using. I had to manually enter some Modeline entries for my 15.4" WXGA screen to get resolutions in the appropriate aspect ratio. Of course, not having them shouldn't cause lock up, just failure to start X.

I'm using 1400x1050 on my laptop. NvAGP can be set to 0, 1 or 2 without any differences with the flicker problem.
Using the nv driver will stop the flicker problem, but crash the textconsole.

Kai

Yeah, that sounds like the 16.1" monitor, which is in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio. So no problem there.

I think I found a sollution 4 the flickering at my laptop. Haven't seen the flicker 4 about 2 hours now.

Do the following in the XFreeConfig-4, otherwise it will still flicker!
Option "HWCursor" = "0"
Option "SWCursor" = "1"
Option "NvAGP" = "1" (if X11 won't start try 2,3 or 0)

And also check the refreshrate KDE hast set 4 your display! It must be at 59 / 60 Hz not above for a TFT display! Make sure you check the box, that will save the settings into the XFreeConfig-4 file. After a reboot my flicker problem was gone.

I'm using Mandrake 10.1 (Cooker) at Uniwill 755IN Series. (Geforce FX 5600go 64MB)

I hope this will help some people too,
Kai

Unhappy Re: Latest NV Linux Driver on Alienware Laptop

I'm sorry to tell you, the flickering is back.
It got much better, only 3-4 flashing screens within 5 hours! But it's not gone.

Greetings,
Kai
