Default Slow 2D Graphics in X

Hi all,

I am a linux newbie. -yet I have learned a lot while installing the nvidia drivers for my system. Finally it works with my Geforce 2 64, and i am almost happy. Refresh rates are just as i wanted, resolution is perfect. I cannot change brightness and gamma settings, but it is ok, i learned that drivers do not support those yet. I can live without those. But:

Why does my xfree86 work considerably slower than the w2k that i have? When i move linux windows around i can see that refreshing the background and repainting the windows takes a lot of time. Is there a way i can check if 2d acceleration is enabled?

Thanks a lot for you help in advance
