Question Status of AMD64 Drivers Please

I'm just embarking on a Linux super-system with an Athlon64 3200+ and FX5900XT combination, onto which i intend to install SuSE Pro 9.1 (swiftly followed by all the 3D games I can find).

I have chosen NVidia because of my good experience with their drivers on my existing RivaTNT2. Can anyone confirm whether the 5332 drivers for AMD64 actually are compatible with kernel 2.6.4, or whether I'm buying myselfe a heap of trouble.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the arch-noob approach.

Don't expect 32 bit games to work with the AMD64 drivers, they won't just yet. And running 32 bit drivers currently won't work on newer ADM64 CPUs, see this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=26575

I have an Athlon64 3200+ and FX5700, and am running SUSE 9.0 with kernel (kotd) 2.6.5-8.62-default. I'm using the GigaByte GA-K8NNXP motherboard which uses the NVIDIA nForce3 150 chip, and the MSI FX5700 TD128 AGP card.

I have run 1.0-5332 with kerenl 2.6.4 and found that some instability, including freezes of X, freezes of the whole operating system, and heap corruption. Not all of these are due to the closed source NVIDIA driver.

I'm currently running the "nv" driver from XFree86 4.3, for stability reasons. I'll post here again once I've installed 1.0-5332 again.

I've been running UT2004 on a Tyan S2885 with a GeForce FX 5200 in a 64-bit environment (SuSE 9) for some time at work and it seems plenty stable. I'm not sure how well this setup would do trying to run a game not meant to run in a 64-bit environment, such as Quake 3, however.

Thanks for the encouragement. I've checked the update ftp site for 9.1 and they have a fetchnvidia script in place that covers both i386 and AMD64. I can't imagine them automating a driver installation process which is going to break their OS.

BTW can I get a job with you?

It should'nt take you long...
The only 3d game's I have got to work in 64bit are ut2004, legends, neverball and Enemy territory(If you dont mind borked textures).
quake2 may be possible if somebody with the knowhow can write a Makefile.

It is indeed possible to compile Quake 2 on AMD64 - but it ain't easy. I did it once, but lost my Makefile (I had to use the Alpha compile target as template). I think I've seen one for UFO (XCom remake) hacked to compile on AMD64, it uses a Quake 2 engine so this one should work...

It would be nice to figure it out (find your missing Makefile).
And send it to the quake2 maintainer so that it is added to the package.
