new graphics card makes Linux hang

I had a nice running system with a Geforce 2 MX card.
Some days ago this card has died (probably thermal problems)
so I replaced it with a brand new XFX PCI card with GeForce FX 5200.
I DID'NT CHANGE ANY SOFTWARE.
The system comes up and seems to work nice, except that I cannot
terminate X11 (via <ctrl><alt><del>) and worse, I cannot switch to
a text terminal (via <ctrl> <F2>)
If I try one of these the system hangs - it cannot even be pinged from
the network, so I have to do a hardware reset.
If I use the NV driver from the XFree tarball I don't have any of these
problems.

start X with startx -- -logverbose 5

Does your system work in Windows? I ask because a modern FX AGP card may not work in a system as old as a P3. The AGP rate may not be supported.

i have the same problem running fedora (kernel 2.6.5-1.327) on a dell inspiron 8200, new bios a11, with Geforce2go. Windows XP was original installed, X works fine with nv and with the nvidia driver, the system hangs.

The system - having a server board - doesn't have an AGP
port. So my XFX is a PCI card.

Yes, it works with Windows 2k and Windows XP!

SOLVED
A hint given on this forum elsewhere did help me, as well.
What DID help me, though, is placing
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"

in the Device section.
