Default problems with 2d and new nvidia driver

i am currently using a geforce 2 on kernel 2.6.5 on debian unstable (although this problem was still present while using kernel 2.4.25) and using the latest drivers, 3D games seem to work fine (foobilliard, ut2k4, tribes2), however when trying to do 2D openGL stuff (supertux, zsnes) instead of getting the game i get some kind of screwed up image, a collage of previously run openGL apps, and if none have been run then i get a chessboard like affect, im pretty sure this is a driver problem as other people report that these apps work fine for then in openGL mode.
