I cannot be certain where slack backs up the config for you.. most distros put it in /boot, named something like config-2.6.6. If the kernel is compiled with config.gz support you can also read the file from the /proc interface:
cat /proc/config.gz | gunzip | less

The config should also be present in the kernel source package (tarball) for the kernel that is available from slack.

I had this problem as well with CC set to "gcc ccache"
I would try setting CC to just "gcc" instead of "cc"
($export CC=gcc)
