Well, it appears I have spoken too soon. I hadn't restarted the comp when I made the last post. After restarting, I can't start X at all. I tried using the backup XF85Config file, that didn't do it either.
I've read through the XFree86 log file and, it appears (to my untrained eye) that the video card is finding a good res to work at and that the video drivers are loaded successfully. Here are the warnings I get (I'm not sure if warnings will prevent X from loading): Warning: font renderer for ".pcf" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".pcf.Z" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".pcf.gz" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".snf" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".snf.Z" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".snf.gz" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".bdf" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".bdf.Z" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".bdf.gz" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".pmf" already registered at priority 0 I'm not really sure what to look for in the log file. I didn't see any errors (EE), not implemented (NI), or unknown (??) flags in the log. There is one warning that is just screaming at me though: "(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)" Here is what seems to be pertaining to the loading of the vid. card (from the log file): . . . (II) NVIDIA(0): AGP 4X successfully initialized (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x800" (II) Loading extension NV-GLX (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3d Acceleration Architecture Initialized (II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2d acceleration architecture (==) NVIDIA(0): Backing store disabled (==) NVIDIA(0): Silken mouse enabled (**) Option "dpms" "true" (**) NVIDIA(0): DPMS enabled (II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL (==) RandR enabled . . . The XF86Config file I'm currently using (I have a few copies, including the original, I can't start X with any of them) the one from the site you directed me to in the earlier post. I would attach the files but, I'm on my pc right now so, I can't access them. thanks -paul |

What are the last couple of lines in the X log? I don't know about the font renderer errors, but they don't look fatal to me. Same goes for the APM error, you can safely ignore that.
If you cannot get X to run at all, try running redhat-config-xfree86 -- you should really be able to get X working again. Backup your current XF86Config (even though it is apparently not working) first. Also keep the current X log somewhere safe. If you've got X up and running could you have a go at posting the X log (the one you quote in your previous post)? Is that the one from the XF86Config we grabbed off the net, by the way? |

Yes, this is the XF86Config you showed me on the web.
I made copies of the current XF86Config and log files and ran redhat-config-xfree86 -- It brought me to a screen showing the the Display gui... the res was set @ 1280x800. I clicked ok and it said the changes were made to the XF86Config file and took me back to the command prompt. I tried to start X again with the same result (it shut down). The last few lines of the X log refer to the "font renderer" stuff... Warning: font renderer for ".pcf" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".pcf.Z" already registered at priority 0 Warning: font renderer for ".pcf.gz" already registered at priority 0 etc. |

So, I reinstalled redhat 9 and... with a little bit more of a clue about what I was doing, I...
1.) reconfigured the XF86Config file, copying the portions pertaining to my vid. card from the config file referred to earlier in this post. 2.) Installed the latest driver from nvidias' site. 3.) Started X... to an enjoyable res. ![]() Thanks for all the help!!!! -Paul |
