Default Re: Beta Linux Drivers? (46.20)

bah, bugger it, I just built the 2.6.4 from source and the 4620 driver is working fine. I'm doing that from now on.

Anyone notced that the antialiasing performance on the 4620 is really poor compared to the 5336, 5336 dont drop much performance at all with AA on.

Needless to say you are on your own and NO ONE will take responsability if something weird happens on your computers.

I won't be able to test them in the next 12 hours. Sorry.

Thanks,
Derick

Have fun

BTW, www.minion.de is a nice place for some driver stuff if your looking for that sort of thing. That link basically just has pre-compiled older drivers for 2.6 series kernels.

I just installed Red hat Fedora Core 2 test 3 with the
2.6.5 kernel. I downloaded and installed the NVIDIA-5336
video driver. The install appeared to succeed. I changed the XF86Config driver from "NV" for "NVIDIA" and rebooted.
X came up cleanly. However, the usual nvidia splash screen did not appear. It appears as if the "NV" driver is still running even after installing NVIDIA-5336 driver. Screen savers requiring
GLX support will not run. I am puzzled as to what is going on.
Previously I built a 2.6.5 kernel from source and installed
NVIDIA-5336 for a FC1 system. The result was that X locked up.
So far I have not had success with NVIDIA-5336 with kernels newer than 2.6.4

Because you need to edit xorg.conf NOT XF86Config. And technically you should get blank VT if you didn't rebuild your kernel sources.

So is nvidia gonna put the nice gui nvidia-settings in upcoming driver release, I just like the gui version then issuing the command.

[just kidding]

so sue me if I tend to like to take the easy way sometimes, I even had a shortcut on my desktop when I used the 46.20's.

Good news and bad news. I'm using 46.20 with 2.6.7-rc2 (patched 2.6.6 to solve ALSA problems). My box is a Dual AthlonMP with a GF 4600/128M.

The driver runs and handles 2D quite well. Further, my glxgears scores
rose from a max of 6802FPS under 53.36 to a very nice 7310 under 46.20.

However, Quake3 GL isn't quite right and UT2k4 won't run because it's complaining about missing support for GL_EXT_bgra or lDrawRangeElements.

You can see a Quake3 screenshot here:
hXXp://cuddletech.com/nv4620-q3rendering.jpg
It's almost like everything is rendering without texture. The game plays great, but doesn't look so hot.

As for the normal questions:
$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled

I use XFree86 4.3.0, I build my own kernels, and I don't specify any nvidia options in my XFree86 config other than turning on NvAGP support. I do not have AGPGART built in.
