AGPGART disabled, FX 5950 Ultra, Fedora Core, help!

I've just installed an FX 5950 Ultra on a 3.0 GHz Dell dimension running Fedora Core from the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run installer.

With X11 running my entire system is *v*e*r*y**s*l*o*w* -- it's painful to use. Windows paint slowly as if under software control with no hw accel. Even the time of day clock runs at half speed! Something is seriously wrong.

This is in a corporate environment with standard configs, our sysadmin is stumped. We have several similar systems and they work fine.

When I look at /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status I find the AGPGART is inactive and Fast Writes are disabled:

SBA: Enabled

Any clues? In /var/log/XF86config.log there is a warning "Failed to verify AGP usage". This seems relevant, but where to go from here?

Your XF86Config has Option ¨NvAGP" ¨1¨
This is Nvidias AGP which is normally faster on supported chipsets.
There is a list of these in the Manual. /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.
If AGPGART is compilled into the kernel it probably wont work. So to use AGPGART change to.

Option ¨NvAGP¨ ¨2¨

You can also remove that line and it will default to NvAGP ¨3¨ which will also use AGPGART first then try NvAGP.
