Default Documents and Settings folder default to D:\ drive

Is there a way that you can default your WinXP to use the D:\ drive as the drive to install the Documents and Settings folder? Or better yet, is there a way to move the D&S folder to the D:\ drive without breaking everything in the registry?

Hello!

This is why i recomend programs that keep their settings and files in their own directory so i dont have to move around documents and settings\application data when i do a reformat/reinstall of XP.

just puts them in d:\programs and make a shortcut after a reinstall and everything is there.

Opera: login sessions, history, visited links, bookmarks, open browse tabs, cookies and wand passwords. Very time saving.

even better than mapping them to D: drive is to mount your drive as a folder. I have done this before and can be done with a new installation or an existing one but an existing installation is REALLY HARD. mainly reg hacks to find c:\doc(blah) and change to d:\doc(blah). New installation is the way to go. I have an SATA RAID setup for 160GB. What I do is install them into another computer that has Windows already installed (2000/XP). Then I use the Windows Computer Managment to partition the drive into 10GB/100GB/25GB/25GB. Then I format all of them (at the same time, LOL). Then I make 3 folders on the 10GB partition...[Documents and Settings], [Program Files], [Temp] (my temp file usually gets pretty big). Then I mount each of the other partitions as these folders...100GB for Program Files, 25 GB for the others. I have gotten some really good results as my programs seem to load pretty fast. This really is the way to go and I wish Microsoft would add this as an option from the beginning. Oh yeah...and while it's connected to the other computer, I enable file compression.

Are you possibly just wanting to back up your "My Documents" folder, or the whole shebang with each user's profiles?

I moved My Pictures, My Music, etc. to d:\doc\ and Windows XP appears to transfer the special attributes of the folder. It even works for different logins on the same machine.

Here's how you can do it during installation of Windows.

Post install of Windows, I believe that this is the Registry key that you would edit:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\P rofileList\ProfilesDirectory

Back up your Registry before tinkering!
