Default GeForce 2 GTS frame rates

Hi,

I am running FC2 with a 2.6.6 kernel with the 5336 drivers installed, and a Dual Athlon MP 2000+ w/ GeForce 2 GTS card (4x agp max).

glxgears seems to report much lower speeds that i remember previously getting.

]$ glxgears
7040 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1408.000 FPS
6970 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1394.000 FPS
7336 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1467.200 FPS
6957 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1391.400 FPS
6873 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1374.600 FPS

Is this resonable for an older card?

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Not Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000017:0x0f000104

Default Re: GeForce 2 GTS frame rates and GeForce FX 5200

Hey,

Well I decided to go get a newer card, and I picked up a GeForce FX 5200, and slapped it in, and moved my GeForce 2 GTS to my older machine (750Athlon running FC1)...

and the older machine got better fps?!?!?!
$ glxgears
8924 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1784.800 FPS
9169 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1833.800 FPS
9203 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1840.600 FPS
9254 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1850.800 FPS
8505 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1701.000 FPS

well this might be expected i was running in 24bit mode on the FC2 machine.

so that shocked me to no end. until i plugged in the new FX 5200 and got 800?

i switched down to 16 bit and got
5269 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1053.800 FPS
6438 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1287.600 FPS
6483 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1296.600 FPS
6501 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1300.200 FPS

I thought the FX 5200 was supposed to be faster than the GeForce 2GTS.

Any help would be nice at this point...

Default Re: GeForce 2 GTS frame rates

Hi Sonik,

The old GTS was a high end card at its launch in ... 2000. The FX 5200 is just an inexpensive and cooler chip to compete in the entry level today (2D graphics and occasional 3D experience).
So, the FX5200 is probably more bandwidth limited than the GTS (memory bandwidth, but pehaps also the core speed).
Since OpenGL is quite conservative, the GTS run faster, but under DX8 or 9, the FX5200 will probably be faster if the new features are enabled (antialiasing, trilinear filtering, new
effects...).
Under Linux, the Ti4200 is a real bargain today (OpenGL and also DX8.1 performance under Windows) and the FX5600/5700 is more interesting for advanced DX9 features.

About the speed of the drivers, please keep in mind that the drivers support all GeForce cards and new releases will always favor latests models to better compete with latests ATI cards for instance.
With the GTS, you should stick with older drivers and only upgrade if it solves a problem you experienced. I was very pleased with release 1.0-2880 when I ran RH 7.2 with my own GTS!

I hope this answered your questions.
