Question fx5500 - only partial driver support ?

Hello there,

I`ve just purchased a geforce fx5500 card, and installed in my system succesfully. My motherboard (asus a7v333) needed a bios-upgrade though.

I went on installing the 5336 driver, the process was ok no errors reported. My X-window system initializes but there are things I`m worrying about.

lspci says:
Code:
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation: Unknown device 0326 (rev a1)
However the chip isn`t recognized, I have direct rendering according to glxinfo and I get ~2600 fps in glxgears. In xdpyinfo I get only two of the three instances mentioned in the nvidia driver readme. GLX and NV-GLX present but NVIDIA-GLX is missing. The games I`ve tried to run up until now were ut2004, quake 3 , and Fuhquake-gl (an enhanced QuakeWorld client) . UT and q3a runs ok, but fuhquake won`t start, receives signal 11 and hangs the system.

My question: will fx5500 chip be supported in the next driver release only or is there any way to get it working with this release (5336) either ?

Why did you need a bios upgrade?

What distribution and kernel are you running?

So? lspci compares the digital signature of your card with it's own database. It has nothing to do with the nvidia drivers or xfree86.

Of course it's recognized. You have a display, you have direct rendering, GLX and NV-GLX (there is no such thing as NVIDIA-GLX). Take a look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log. All your games work except for fuhquake, which is probably because you did something wrong while installing it. Don't blame this on the nvidia driver.

It IS working! I have an FX5900 myself, which has a more recent chip than yours.

Because with my original bios the system didn`t boot. I`ve upgraded from 1011 to 1017.

Currently I`m running Gentoo with 2.6.5-r1 kernel (gentoo development sources)

Anyway I`ve managed to resolve the issue with fuhquake. The following line is needed before starting it.

Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=/lib/libpthread.so.0
So, everything is fine now.
