Unhappy SUSE 9.0 crashes

I am experiencing frequent crashes of KDE applications
under SUSE 9.0. Applications like kmail, konqueror
and kicker crash frequently. Every now and then the whole GUI crashes and the NVIDIA driver reboots.

Here is the information on my system:

1. Video card: NVidia GeForce FX 5600SE;
2. Driver version: 1.0-4496;
3. Distro: SUSE 9.0;
4. Video bios revision:;
5. Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80 GHz.

I am attaching XFree86Config + log file.

SUSE 9.0 failed to recognize my VP191b monitor. I am not sure if this is related to the problems I am having.

Smile Re: SUSE 9.0 crashes

I may have solved my problem -- it appears to have been a bad monitor configuration. I have a Viewsonic VP191b monitor, and experienced very serious problems with it because SUSE 9.0 failed to recognise it.

On installing SUSE 9.0, the system set the monitor specs to VESA 1280x1024@85hz, and as a result, the driver "nv" drove the monitor out of range frequently. I changed this to VESA 1280x1024@75hz, but was still experiencing the crashes I described in my previous posts. I have now changed it to LCD 1280x1024@75hz, and so far I've experienced only two application crashes after working for a couple of hours. So, I think the problem is basically solved.

For anybody experiencing similar problems with this particular monitor, I recommend the posting by Terje J. Hanssen on the SUSE e-mail forums:
