Default X-server crash and burn on exit

I have recompiled to kernel 2.6.7 today, and everything works perfectly except for one thing; the nvidia-driver. I'm running XFree86 version 4.3.0 on Slackware 9.1 The driver works fine when I start X. I tested using an opengl-accelerated game called tuxracer, and everything just worked fine until I shut down the x-server. Then the machine froze completely and I couldn't even ping it from another machine. I have tried to look at the XFree86.0.log, but the last message before the machine either freezes or suddenly reboots is always a network-connection to the x-server that is refused. Nothing more! I did reinstall the nvidia-driver after booting up the new kernel, and I did follow the instructions in the README for how to edit XF86Config after installing it. And yes -- there is support in the kernel for my agp-chipset.

Anyone know what's going on? I would be very grateful for hearing about it.
