Default Re: startx crashes with random characters on screen

Only things I can see are:-
Jun 27 16:02:13 www kernel: 0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-5336 Wed Jan 14 18:29:26 PST 2004
Jun 27 16:02:19 www kernel: 0: NVRM: AGPGART: unable to retrieve symbol table
in kern.log

and matching:-
Jun 27 16:02:13 www kernel: 0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-5336 Wed Jan 14 18:29:26 PST 2004
Jun 27 16:02:19 www modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module agpgart
in
sys.log, which is interesting because I recompiled agpgart in my kernel staticly yesterday. I assume that the nvidia module is trying to load the agpgart module, that isn't there anymore. I guess that's because the nvidia interfaces were compiled when agpgart was a module. I'm uncertain if it would matter, since the nvidia driver would try to fall back on it's own agp handler, and I have had the agpgart module installed all the way through my testing phase.

I tried without ACPI, as well as without BIOS cached to ram, video BIOS cached to ram, video caching...basicaly every performance enhancing option disabled and turning on the video card wait-states. I've given thought to trying an earlier nvidia driver, but that might need to wait 'till next weekend.
