Default Computer Freezes Up When X is Exited

Hi,

I've been having this problem for about two weeks now abd it's REALLY annoying. It can't be too good for my system either because every time I exit X or switch from X to a console my computer completely freezes up. I was using the open source nv driver before but it didn't have any TV-out support so I switched to nVidia's 1.0-6106-pkg1 driver.

On completing the install I received a message that the module tainted my kernel. I got some info on that and gathered it was just a license issue so it shouldn't be the source of any problems, is that right?

Anyways. Any time I exit X my computer freezes up. Completely. And I have to manually reboot. It even happens when I type "reboot" or "halt" from an aterm in X.

Here's some information about my system:

Model: GeForce4 Ti 4200
IRQ: 11
Video BIOS: 04.25.00.30.16
Card Type: AGP
Motherboard: AK77-333 from AOpen with a bunch of VIA chips.

I appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Hi!

It seems that this problem exists now for a long time. It's related with using tv-out. Many people reported, the problem dissapeared, when not using tv-out (no TwinView, no cloning, just one ordinary screen-section in XF86Config and disabling tv-out with
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV" # you can also try "TV,DFP"
or combined with
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" # you can also try "CRT-0" or "CRT-1" )

Could you be so nice and try these options once and check if the problem remains, so that we can see if we're talking about the same problem?

One of the first threads about this problem I've found here, was this: problems escaping from X started in July 2003.
Or simply try to search for "tv-out freeze" or "tv-out hang". There are some other interesting threads about this problem.

The last driver which worked for me was 1.0-4496 although other people reported problems with this version too.

I switched to 1.0-6106 a few days ago and hoped the problem was solved, but it's still remaining. I'll try to do some debugging in the next days (playing around with some options, trying different driver and kernel versions..) and will try to generate a very detailled bug-report for the nvidia people (or to find a solution ) . Maybe you could also report some details of your configuration

At the moment, I'm using two different X-configs and reboot every time I need the TV-OUT (I know, that's definitly not the linux way of doing things..). The most times my system doesn't freeze, when I shutdown or reboot from gdm. But it freezes every time I try to change to console with Alt-F1 or to kill the X server with Alt-Backspace.

I'll reply with more detailled infos in a few days.

Thanks for the friendly input.

It was indeed the TV-out option that was messing around with my system. Thanks for pointing that out, I never would have guessed it myself. I commented all TV-out related options from my XF86Config-6 file and rebooting and exiting X et cetera works now.

I couldn't find any info on this problem myself. I didn't really know what to search for. But the link you gave me was helpful. Thanks. Appearantly all I have to do to be able to reboot/exit X and such is unplug the TV-out cable. That's a minor inconvienence but it's still a very strange problem.

"Maybe you could also report some details of your configuration"
I'm all for helping out. I'm not sure how ever what to report.

Thanks alot for the help.

You're welcome.

You could do the following to report more details for the people at nvidia:

Run as root nvidia-bug-report.sh. This will generate a log file named nvidia-bug-report.log in the current direcrory. This file contains a lot of useful info about your system and your configuration (kernel and driver version, chipset type, xfree logfile, loaded modules...).

Mail this file with an exact description of the problem (incl. the steps the reproduce it) to linux-bugs@nvidia.com (Could you also post it here, so that I can compare with mine?)

Reproduction of the problem seems to be very easy in our case, but mention details like your system freezes also when you're exiting X normally (which mine doesn't for some reason). I can reboot or poweroff without problems the most times.

I will try to do the same with more different configurations. You can also try to play around with some options (trying nvidia AGP driver and kernel AGPgart driver, switch to older drivers, disable FastWrite and SideBankAdrssing if enabled, try some of the interesting sounding options for XF86Config, try some other X configuration,....).

I will try to do the same, but it seems that I won't have time for it before Monday. I will reply when I got more.

Good luck!

Here's my report. I didn't spend much time on it but I hope it helps...

I haven't sent it in yet because I thought maybe you would comment on it for me first?

"I'm having trouble with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run. (Along with
the other drivers...) I have TV-Out enabled (XF86Config-4 attached).

Every time I exit X my computer locks up, giving me nothing but a black
screen. This happens when I switch from X to a console or even when I
type "reboot" or "halt" as root in a terminal in X. It always freezes up
when it exits X.

I have included a bug report generated by nvidia-bug-report.sh. My
system information should be there so I'll safe some time by not typing
it up here.

Now, when my screen DOESN'T go black I have either disabled TV-Out in my
XF86Config-4 file or unplugged my TV-Out cable. I thought it might be
useful so I've included my kernel configuration. Framebuffer is enabled
there but not being used.

A weird thing that happens when I switch to a console having unplugged
the TV-Out cable but not disabled TV-Out in my XF86Config-4 is that my
colored characters on the console are displayed as faded out to the
point you actually have to lean closer to the screen and peer your eyes
to see them.

I think that's all. Oh, and I really appreciate the support you've given
the Linux community. Some of the people on the nV News Linux forum don't
seem to appreciate your efforts so I just thought I'd let you know it
really helps. As long as you keep up the good work all my future
graphics cards will be from nVidia.

Your drivers aren't open source but you're showing good example, which,
hopefully, other hardware manufacturers will follow."

Thanks.

Send the report to nvidia. I think it contains all needed information and details. I've also sent a first (and a little bit shorter) bug report to nvidia. You can find it also at: nvidia bug report.

I hope we will hear something from nvidia. I'm very interested if they're already know some details about the cause of this bug.
