Default So no bright/color full games on the Doom engine?

I am waiting on my copy and have not seen the game in action only screen caps so I dont really know if it has any bright spots or color as Far Cry. But I take it from the many comparsons most dont think the Doom engine will be capable of bright outdoors because the darkness hides low textures some has said. Do you think this is a Doom only problem or will it trasfer over to other games that may use the engine? Cant imagine all games based on the Doom engine being indoors.

Thoughts welcome. I am just going by some of the posts I see so I may be off.

It should be able to use any color really, the engine is capably of hi-res textures, it's just that id has chosen low-res textures for some small parts. For all we know Doom 3 could be 10x better then Far Cry in terms of bright colors, and the outside. It's Mars what do you expect lol.

I bet the engine is capable of color, but Doom is made by Id and I think they must see the world in brown, black, and red because every game they've ever made uses them almost exclusivly.

I would honsetly be surprised if very many games use the Doom III engine in it's current iteration. It's 4 player multiplayer limitation (I know, you can turn it off, but they don't recommend that) limits it severly compared to the Unreal/HL2/Far Cry engines which look just as good or better in most situations.

Well now that i have seen the Mars landscape, right at the beginning when you have to walk through it a short distance to get to the communications building... i think it looks amazing. The Doom 3 engine would be ideal for outdoor areas because of the normal mapping quality and the lighting. It simply looks AMAZING. I hope the game has more Mars scenes because so far, that is deffinitely the most impressive (graphically) part of the game ive seen.

DOOM 3 does not employ much color because it does not need to... it is aiming for atmosphere and is fine with what it does...

any other engine utilising doom3's base will likely look more colorful if it is required as part of the game...

far cry can be played dark as can a bunch of other games but would not look good...

games like thief3 and deus ex and the splinter cell games (and doom3) don't require much color because they rely on shadows for atmospheric effect...

anyways the others in the thread have explained it better than i have

Me wishes Deus Ex2 and Thief 3 used the doom engine..seems so efficient and so incredibly impressive. Stencil shadows in unreal engine based games don't seem to do to well anyway...
