Default Installing nVidia driver for SuSE 9.1 on a Presario R3200 Laptop

Please forgive me if I sound ignorant, I'm relatively new to Linux and have been bashing my head into this problem for a week now.

I am trying to load the nVidia drivers in SuSE 9.1 Professional (64-bit) on my Compaq Presario R3200 laptop (R3000z series with 64-bit 3400+ processor and the nVidia Geforce-4 440 GO 64M chipset. Every time I try to load it from the YOU module in YAST-2 it loads, the 3d acceleration works and then when I restart the xserver refuses to start and it just leaves me at a shell.

Also, even though this isn't an nVidia-specific question, I am having a lot of trouble getting the screen setup correctly. I have the 1920x1200 LCD and regardless of the settings that I use, whenever I go to shut down, the screen gets all garbled and starts scrolling top-to-bottom. Anyone have any recommendations?
