Default 1920x1200 mode with Quadro4...

I have an NVidia Quadro4 with dual DVI output and two DVI Sony SDM-P232W/B 23" 16:9 flatpanel LCD displays. Each are capable of 1920x1200 native resolution. Under Windows XP and the NVidia drivers, I am able to use TwinView and get 1920x1200 on both screens.

Under Linux, however, I am only able to get 1600x1200. I am using the 6106 driver version off the NVidia website. Below is the logfile output. Far below is my XF86Config file.

How can I get the driver to support the native resolution of the panel? Obviously the hardware is capabible of it since it works fine under XP.

Thanks!

Default Re: 1920x1200 mode with Quadro4...

In short the problem is like this. There are lots of common resolutions like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and so on. The resolution you want to use is not a standard resolution. On windows this resolution is added by a "modeline" which I think is a .inf file (or it is autodetected).

To get this resolution on Linux you need to create a modeline called "1920x1200" and put it in the monitor section of the monitor and then you can just use it. Calculate a modeline using http://www.sh.nu/nvidia/gtf.php (based on http://gtf.sf.net). The modeline it outputs is this one:
# 1920x1200 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 74.52 kHz; pclk: 193.16 MHz
Modeline "1920x1200_60.00" 193.16 1920 2048 2256 2592 1200 1201 1204 1242 -HSync +Vsync

In this case because the mode is called 1920x1200_60.00 you need to use this name instead of plain 1920x1200. You can rename it ofcourse.

Default Re: 1920x1200 mode with Quadro4...

Awesome! That worked perfectly!!!!

You know, NVidia really needs to do a better job with the configuration options. I spent most of a day trying to figure out all the options in the XF86Config.sample file and make it work with my dual Quadro4 with two 1920x1200 FPs. And I didn't acutally get it completely working until your post. I consider myself a very advanced Linux/Unix/Windows user/admin, and setting it up was just about out of my capabilities. There is no-way a "normal" use could ever figure any of that out.

The other thing that really caused me no-end of heartache was the fact that the default NVidia driver that comes with even the current version of Redhat Linux WS doesn't correctly support video cards with DVI output! This has *got* to get fixed. The system boots up and then the screens just go blank!

The new nvidia-settings X-based control panel is cool, but frankly, its not much use until you can get the basics working correctly. A really user friendly GUI to modify and configure the XF86Config file is badly needed (with support for all the myrid of options that are avaialble like the monitor resolution). This is a CS1A project for somebody, how come it hasn't been done yet?

Thanks again for the help on the resolution!!

Default Re: 1920x1200 mode with Quadro4...

Now I am totally confused ! I was quite sure that a single link TMDS connection (aka DVI) was limited to a maximum bandwidth of 165 MHz. Using standard video timings, a single link DVI connection will support 1920x1080, but not 1920x1200. My understanding was that the only way to get 1920x1200 was to use special video timings with reduced blanking intervals (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/...240T_info.html).

However, it seems like users are reporting success with standard video timings and clock rates far in excess of the rate available on the TDMS chip sets. What am I missing here ??? Thanks.

Think it can be two things. Or the specs are just violated or perhaps the nvidia driver does some clever things for you.

If the NVidia driver is doing "clever things", then it might explain why I couldn't adjust my pixel clock rate as we discussed last week ... Wish there was some way we could figure out what is going on here ...
