gforce2 with suse 9.1 pro

hi all,
i wonder if anyone could help a newbee to linux suse 9.1 ? i have installed it alongside win 98 se and if i use yast to download then nvidia drivers from the yast site, end up with a blank screen. the card is a gforce 2 and i am wondering if the card is to old for the system. i have also tried it with all of the linux updates installed (60-70 meg on dial up) but it still runs in 2d mode untill i reboot into a blank screen.
hope someone could give me an indication of what i am missing.

ram=256 ddr
release=2.6.5-7.95-default
