Default 0283 problems + hardlock

Okay, I may be doing something wrong but here's what's happening.

Install using the nvidia installer. modprobe nvnet, do a ifconfig and eth0 isn't there.
I then modprobe nvsound, and my system hardlocks. Upon reboot, gentoo gets as
far as "Starting PCI hotplugging..." and then hardlocks again. After a cold reboot everything is normal (except I no longer have sound/network).

I'm using kernel 2.6.8-rc2.

Another thing, what exactly do I need to compile into my kernel in the way of sound support. I just enabled "Sound card support", and removed ALSA and OSS from the kernel completely.

Thanks.

You need the OSS support... after that it should work.

The ALSA OSS emulation, or the deprecated OSS support?

The deprecated OSS support. Don't enable the alsa OSS emulation, and if you want alsa you should compile it to modules.

Okay, I'm still getting hardlocks.

I've tried with only OSS, with ALSA, with ALSA+OSS, tried disabling 4K stacks, and regparm, all combinations of the above, sacraficing kittens.. nothing works. Tried different kernels, no go.

I have an Abit NF7-S.

The strange thing is, with just the OSS support enabled, the installer successfully modprobe's the driver.
When I modprobe it myself, it hardlocks. I'm at a complete loss, and for now I've switched back to the ALSA drivers. No hardware mixing for me

You should report this issue to nvidia... perhaps in the next release it will be fixed....

I had the exact same problem but i fixed it
First I removed alsa from my kernel completely and turned off 4k stacks.
Then I enabled oss support as a module and picked a few random sound cards.
After which i rebooted and it still did not work.

So then i rebooted again and boot my kernel (2.6.8rc-4mm1) with noapic acpi=off nolapic and it worked so its an acpi or apic problem would be my guess...

Good luck

Ok
I went back to having alsa im my kernel(everything as a module) and I am using 4k stacks again with the regparm thing too also took out all of the oss modules except for oss its self.

Then i performed some boot param tests

noapic acpi=off nolapic
Module loads

nolapic
Nothing works

noapic
Module loads

However i did not try acpi=off but i like acpi so i dont want it off.

So it seems to not like apic for some reason /me shrugs but it works now hope someone found this useful(besides me)

Interesting find, as I wasn't able to insmod the driver with my Abit NF7-S 2.0, as well. I haven't tried to deactivate APIC though. So the sound guys at Nvidia did something wrong I guess...

I'll send my bug-report to them...

I ended up removing the local apic and ioapic support from my kernel, which caused libata to hardlock my machine. So I switched to 2.6.7 without the apics and it sort of works now.

If I try to use nvmixer, some settings will either hardlock my machine, or cause random noise to be played until I reboot. But, I have hardware mixing so I'll live with this until nvidia release fixed drivers.

On another note, cedega's sound is now distorted, and plays with crackling noises in the background.

Hello!

During boot I see Loading sound module (nvsound) and computer freezes.
So removed nforce drivers and again installed them. Now it went worse. The nvnet driver installed well but nvaudio installation stuck at 40% where modprobe nvaudio was executed.

My config:
proc: athlonXP 2500+ barton
ram: DDR 2 x 256MB twinbank 400MHz
mobo: Abit NF7-S v2.0 with current bios 24 (soundstorm)
gfx: MSI GeforceFX 5200

Mandrake10
Kernel 2.6.7/2.6.8 from www.kernel.org (I enabled OSS: Intel ICH (i8xx) audio support because old nforce drivers used it)

greetings,
Zbigniew
