From what Carmack said "at" Quakecon, it looks like the slowest part of the lighting engine is when there are multiple lights hitting the same polygons (or pixels maybe?). Outside, there's generally only one light yeah? The sun? Sure, there will be the light flashes from guns, explosions or whatever, and also the increased polygon count from the shadows (but outside there wouldn't be too many shadows cast from the creatures, player, whatever... just look at the shadow cast from someone outside in real life.. so they could generate some sort of accurateish but cheap shadowing technique for that outside).

Well anyways, I don't really have any idea what I'm talking about but... it's just something I was thinking about after reading the overview of Carmack's speech at Quakecon..

Hmm, well, that would explain why I was getting less than 10 FPS in the Guardian fight with those 3 floating light thingies hovering around, while in the outdoor areas I was getting around 25 FPS. But I still don't think the Doom 3 engine would do outdoors very well with the lighting system they used in Doom 3, they'd probably need to use a simpler lighting system for all the objects you'd see in a Farcry-type environment (like the lighting system Half-life 2 uses, that seems pretty simple yet decent looking).
