Default enabling ANISO no speed difference?

anyone notice enabling ANISO makes no speed difference in opengl apps or games? I use 8x. if I disable ANISO it is not faster. AA=on in fact is half the speed. For some reason incredibly slower than in winxp. benchmarked with specviewperf 6.
AMD 1800 FX 5700 kernel 2.6.8. driver 6106 or 6111 not usable at all (lock up)

I turn on using environment varibles and start apps from that shell. I don't know any other ways to verify besides this. I don't know any ANISO testing programs.
